Senator Zubiri said that he will be taking the Kaamulan contingent to Sinulog and Dinagyang Festivals. With all due respect to him, I don’t think it is essential. Setting Kaamulan in the Sinulog or Dinagyang is like combining oil and water. The latter festivals are Christian festivals and that the dances there are what we call as “hybrid”.
Hybrid in the sense that the dance steps engaged in Sinulog and Dinagyang is an adjustment of the original dance.
Kaamulan dances are authentic ethnic dance which a little bit slower in pacing and tempo. It will come out as boring and dragging to the audience and the judges who are adapted to fast paced kind of dances.
In addition, I pity our lumads who will experience a day long performance under the blazing heat of the sun for something which they don’t believe. I don’t think it will be comforting to dance in honor of the Holy Child when they are not believers. It will be uncomfortable for them.
Kaamulan has already produced a position in Festivals because it’s an authentic ethnic lumad celebration.
No need not publicize it further.
